Kitchen renovations in Blackwood

Kitchens for Blackwood homes

Blackwood is the main hub of the Mitcham hills, with homes on sloping, treed blocks and cooler weather than the plains.

Blackwood is about 10 km south of the CBD, in the City of Mitcham area. Mitcham has two sides. On the plains, suburbs like Mitcham, Kingswood, Torrens Park, Hawthorn and Colonel Light Gardens are full of character homes. Up the hill, Belair, Blackwood, Eden Hills and Coromandel Valley have sloping blocks, split-level homes and bush outlooks.

Popular kitchen projects in Blackwood

• Split-level hills homes opened up to the view
• Better storage and a walk-in pantry for busy family homes
• Kitchens that open onto a deck on a sloping block
• Kitchens planned around the view, with plenty of natural light

Outdoor kitchens in Blackwood

Evenings are cooler and winters wetter in Blackwood, so outdoor kitchens here usually sit under a solid roof, often with a heater or fireplace nearby. Much of the area is bushfire-prone: if your property has a bushfire attack level (BAL) rating, choose non-combustible materials for anything attached to the house. Sloping blocks may need a deck or some retaining to create a level space.

Before you renovate

Most kitchen renovations in Blackwood don't need council approval if the work stays inside and the structure doesn't change. Parts of City of Mitcham are within Historic Area or Character Area Overlays under the Planning and Design Code. These mostly affect changes you can see from the street, so a kitchen inside the house is rarely an issue, but an extension or new verandah may need approval. Make sure whoever you hire holds a South Australian building work contractor's licence, gives you a written contract for work of $12,000 or more, and arranges building indemnity insurance if the job needs approval. If you're replacing the benchtop, remember engineered stone can no longer be installed, so look at porcelain, sintered stone, natural stone or laminate.
