What goes into an outdoor kitchen

An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a built-in BBQ with storage either side, or a full second kitchen. Common inclusions are:

  • A built-in BBQ, side burner or teppanyaki plate
  • A sink with hot and cold water and proper drainage
  • An outdoor-rated fridge or bar fridge
  • A wood-fired or gas pizza oven
  • Bins, drawers and cupboards made for outdoor use
  • Weatherproof power points, task lighting and an outdoor rangehood

Materials that suit Adelaide

Adelaide outdoor kitchens have to handle summers over 40 degrees, strong UV, and either salty sea air on the coast or cold, wet winters in the Hills. Materials matter more outside than in:

  • Cabinets: powder-coated aluminium, marine-grade stainless steel or compact laminate, rather than standard kitchen board
  • Benchtops: porcelain and sintered stone are UV-stable and handle heat well. Natural granite also works. Engineered stone is no longer available.
  • Hardware: 316 marine-grade stainless steel for BBQs, sinks and handles near the coast
  • Location: out of the western sun, sheltered from the prevailing wind, and close enough to the indoor kitchen to carry plates

Gas, power and ventilation

Built-in BBQs can run on mains gas where it's available, or on LPG. Gas must be connected by a licensed gas fitter, and new power points by a licensed electrician. If the BBQ sits under a roof or in a partly enclosed alfresco, it needs enough ventilation for the appliance, and often a rangehood. Your gas fitter will check this.

Do you need approval?

A freestanding outdoor kitchen on an existing paved area or slab usually doesn't need development approval. A new verandah, roofed pergola or deck to go with it may, depending on its size, height and location, and whether your property is in a heritage or bushfire area. In South Australia, applications go through the PlanSA portal. The builder quoting your job should confirm what's needed.

Indoor and outdoor together

Some of the best Adelaide kitchens are planned as one: a servery window or bench that opens from the indoor kitchen to the alfresco, matching benchtops, and a single set of trades doing both. If you're renovating inside, it's worth asking for an outdoor quote at the same time.

Common questions

How much does an outdoor kitchen cost?

A built-in BBQ bench with storage starts from about $5,000. Most mid-range outdoor kitchens with a BBQ, sink, fridge and a porcelain or sintered stone top come in between $12,000 and $25,000. A roof, pergola or deck is extra. See the cost guide.

What's the best benchtop for an outdoor kitchen?

Porcelain and sintered stone are the most popular in Adelaide because they handle heat and UV well. Natural granite also works. Engineered stone can no longer be installed in Australia.

Can I have an outdoor kitchen near the beach?

Yes, with the right materials. Use 316 marine-grade stainless steel, powder-coated aluminium or compact laminate cabinets, and plan for shelter from the sea breeze.

Does a BBQ under a roof need a rangehood?

It depends on how enclosed the area is and the BBQ's requirements. Partly enclosed alfrescos often need a rangehood or extra ventilation. Your gas fitter will check before connecting it.
