Kitchens for Highgate homes
Highgate is about 4 km south-east of the CBD, in the City of Unley area. Unley is classic character territory, with villas, bungalows and cottages on tree-lined streets in suburbs like Unley Park, Kings Park, Malvern, Hyde Park, Goodwood and Parkside. Large parts sit within historic areas, so most kitchen work happens at the back of the house.
Popular kitchen projects in Highgate

- Indoor and outdoor kitchens planned together and linked by a servery window
Outdoor kitchens in Highgate
Adelaide summers regularly pass 40°C, so an outdoor kitchen in Highgate works best under a roof or a well-placed pergola, out of the western sun. Choose UV-stable benchtops such as porcelain or sintered stone, allow for an outdoor-rated fridge, and have a licensed gas fitter connect the BBQ to mains gas where it's available so you're not swapping bottles mid-party.
Before you renovate
Most kitchen renovations in Highgate don't need council approval if the work stays inside and the structure doesn't change. Parts of City of Unley are within Historic Area or Character Area Overlays under the Planning and Design Code. These mostly affect changes you can see from the street, so a kitchen inside the house is rarely an issue, but an extension or new verandah may need approval. Make sure whoever you hire holds a South Australian building work contractor's licence, gives you a written contract for work of $12,000 or more, and arranges building indemnity insurance if the job needs approval. If you're replacing the benchtop, remember engineered stone can no longer be installed, so look at porcelain, sintered stone, natural stone or laminate.

Do I need council approval for a kitchen renovation in Highgate?
Usually not, if the work stays inside the house and doesn't change the structure. Removing a load-bearing wall, building an extension or adding a roofed verandah for an outdoor kitchen may need development approval, which in South Australia is lodged through the PlanSA portal. For Highgate, development applications are assessed by the City of Unley. Parts of City of Unley are within Historic Area or Character Area Overlays under the Planning and Design Code.
